No, the Mepal Mio collection is not made of melamine. A variety of other materials are used to make our Mepal Mio collection. Information about what our products are made from can be found in the product specifications for each product on our website.
For this range, we use Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT), Polypropylene (PP), and Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE).
Yes, of course. All Mepal children's dinnerware complies with the European laws and regulations for consumer products that come into contact with food and beverages and is therefore safe to use. When used normally, i.e., not heated for a long time (longer than 2 hours), these products can be used safely.
Our advice is to do what you already do naturally to avoid your little one burning their mouth – allow the food to cool down a little before serving.
Yes, this is not a problem. When 'boiling hot' food (100ºC) is removed from the pan and put straight onto a plate, it will actually cool to between 60 and 80ºC in just a few seconds. The standard of 70ºC is only an issue when a product is subjected to prolonged heating for more than two hours. It's safe to use melamine products with food at a higher temperature as long as this is for less than two hours.
However, in practice, your food will never stay hot for more than a few minutes, so you can continue to use your dinnerware safely. All our products are safe for both children and adults and comply with European legislation and regulations for consumer products that come into contact with food and drink.
Yes, this is not a problem. The dinnerware may be exposed briefly (less than 2 hours) to a temperature above 70ºC, so a hot wash in your dishwasher won't cause any problems. The temperature of your dishwasher's hot wash program is usually only high for a short time. The standard we comply with is based on this practical situation, so our products can be cleaned in the dishwasher safely. All our products are safe for both children and adults and comply with European legislation and regulations for consumer products that come into contact with food and drink.
We are often asked, "My child finds sucking through the valve too difficult. Can I use the cup without the valve?" The answer is very simple: yes, you can. The Mepal Mio leakproof sippy cup can also be used without the valve. However, the cup will no longer be leakproof and will leak when held upside down.
We recommend that you immerse the cups in the Mepal Mio collection in boiling water for 5 minutes before using them for the first time. This is to ensure that they are hygienically clean. For daily or more frequent cleaning, we recommend that only the silicone parts are sterilised by boiling.
